To get the best value out of Home Assistant, you will need to configure it to use HACS (Home Assistant Community Store). This will give you access to a wide range of integrations.

To install HACS will require running commands from the command line. For ease and simplicity you can copy the commands exactly as they are.

To access the command line you can go to Settings

Select Advanced SSH & Web Terminal

If it isn’t already running click Start in the lower left.

Click on OPEN WEB UI in the lower right side.

You will now be presented with access to the command line.

Copy and paste the following command ensuring to capture it all including the “-” at the end.

wget -O - https://get.hacs.xyz | bash -

Once it has run you will see the following successful installation and the Home Assistance needs to restart.

To reboot go back to the main screen and click System

Click on the power icon on the right hand side.

then Restart Home Assistant

A notification will let you know that the connection is lost, while the system restarts.

Once Home Assistant is back and running, click on Settings

Click on Add Integration on the lower right of the screen.

Search for HACS and click on it.

A list of options/agreements will be displayed. We will tick all of them including the experimental features, and click SUBMIT.

HACS will now look to link up to your Github account. If you don’t already have a Github account, it is quick and free to set up.

In the upper right click on Sign Up

Enter your email address and click Continue.

Enter a password, click Continue, and then choose a username and click Continue. An email will be sent with a verification code. Once done with the github account setup you can continue.


From the HACS install you will be directed to go to your github account and use the authorization key to link up.

On the github page paste or type in the code.

Back on Home Assistant it will confirm success.

At this stage is everything has worked, you will now have HACS showing in the sidebar on Home Assistant.

We will now move on to make Home Assistant useful by setting it up to track Electricity Usage.
